Mosquitoes…Where Are The Bats?

If you’ve noticed more mosquitoes this summer, especially during dusk, you’re not alone.  My wife Shawna & I have also noticed an increase in mosquitoes this summer.

Shawna also observed the lack of bat activity around our home.  Coincidence?  I think not.

It seems that a fungus called White-Nose Syndrome (WNS) has spread to Washington State.

See links below:

https://wdfw.wa.gov/conservation/health/wns/

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/White-nose_syndrome

The die off of bats in our area has led to an increase in mosquitoes.  What can you do to protect yourself from mosquito bites?

1.) Eliminate standing pools of water around your home.

2.) Reduce outdoor activities at dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active.

3.) Use insect repellent.  If you are sensitive to chemicals, you can make your own bug spray with: vinegar, witch hazel, eucalyptus and tea tree essential oils.

It’s sad about the bats dieing out, and hopefully a miracle will happen and the bats will thrive again.  Until then protect yourself and your family from mosquito bites.

Living In Mukilteo

Having lived all over Puget Sound has shown me just how lucky we are to be living in such a beautiful part of the world.  Lush and green, with moderate temperatures year round, we have natural beauty and abundance all around us.  From The Olympic Mountain range to the West, The Cascade Mountain range to the East, and Puget Sound in the middle, it’s no wonder Seattle is considered the 2nd fastest growing city in The U.S. according to Forbes:

https://www.forbes.com/sites/samanthasharf/2018/02/28/full-list-samericas-fastest-growing-cities-2018/#3cc15ad07feb

My current residence in Mukilteo has been my favorite of all the places I’ve called home.  With Japanese Gulch, Puget Sound and a plethora of cool people, Mukilteo is such a wonderful place to live.

If you’re like me, and you also live in the Mukilteo/Everett area, you might be wondering how the new public terminal at Paine Field is going to effect our daily lives.

See link below for an update on the terminals progress:

https://www.kiro7.com/news/north-sound-news/new-commercial-passenger-terminal-at-paine-field-starting-to-take-shape/75517648

I’m not sure myself how the terminal will impact my life, and only time will tell, but I did come up with an idea to measure the impact, if any.

For all the scientists out there, I propose we record our activities for 5-10 minute each day that we’re outside.  For example, you can use a Go Pro, or your smart phones video or voice memo feature for recordings, ie, I just made a voice memo titled “ambient back yard” with the date & time.  That way we can record the same activity once the airport is open, and we’ll have an a/b comparison to document the noise impact, if any.

With your help these combined recordings will be an invaluable documentation of the impact of Propellor Airports new public terminal.

Sometimes not knowing the outcome of something is the most difficult part. Maybe this will provide us some peace of mind.

If you see us walking in The Gulch, make sure to say hi.

Paine Field Council Meeting

On Tuesday The Paine Field Community Council met at the Future of Flight for a 7:00PM discussion about Propellor Airports planned public terminal.  The meeting was filled with concerned residents worried about the environmental effects, increased noise and traffic, and how all of these potentialities might effect our activities of daily living.

Paine Field Heritage Museum
Flying Heritage Museum

The terminal will host flights from Alaska Airlines, United Airlines and Southwest Airlines.  Propellor Airports leases 11.5 acres of land from Paine Field for 30 years, with 2 possible extensions of 10 years each.  Propellor hopes to have the 2 gate terminal operational by July 15th to give the whole operation time to practice and work out any kinks before the public can first use the terminal starting September 1st, 2018.

Paul Anderson, Operations Specialist, reminded all in attendance that Paine Field operates with no noise curfews.  All noise abatement is purely voluntary. Paul showed a graphic of all noise complaints from 2017.  The three top noise complaints about the airport were: 1.) The Dream Lifter which had the most complaints, receiving 50%.  2.) Active military planes and choppers received 20% of the complaints.  3.) The WWII war birds from The Heritage Museum received 6%.

Bruce Fisher, Co-Deputy Director for Paine Field said that as of now, the airport is only at 30% of capacity for all operations.  The first year of commercial flights leaving and arriving will add an additional 17,000 flights per year.  Bruce also stated that the FAA wants a new Master Plan of Paine Field, which will be started sometime in 2019.

I left the meeting feeling trepidatious.  Change is inevitable, and this is going to happen whether we want it to or not.  Shawna and I spend a lot of time in our back yard, especially during warmer months, and we are looking forward to having one last summer as things are.  Will we notice a change next summer as we walk the dogs in Japanese Gulch, or entertaining guests on the deck?  Only time will tell.

January 2018 Seattle Housing Heat Index

See how the Seattle housing market compares to other areas in the country with the real estate heat index. You can see from the graph that buyers are already starting to increase in our area. That leads to multiple offers on most desirable new listings. Buyers need to prepare for intense competition and should make sure they have a qualified experienced agent. Having a competent agent can give you an edge to “win” the home.

Selling

Sellers can use the Seattle housing heat index to their advantage to obtain the highest net profit when selling their home. Timing the market can be a 10% swing or more depending on conditions. That is one of the reasons to obtain a market analysis. Find qualified real estate agent that works in your area who can asses the housing market and can advise you on the best time to sell.

If you need to sell right away, it is a great time! In fact, the inventory is so low there are many homes that sell over listing price within a week on the market. Buyers are having to waive numerous contingencies to compete with other buyers. If you’re thinking about selling but are waiting for the traditional “Spring” market it may be in your best interest to list now. Those things that you wanted to finish before listing might not be important. You may be able to sell now for a bigger profit. Contact us if you want our opinion.

Buying

If you need to buy now, it’s imperative to hire an experienced talented agent that will use a plethora of resources to make your housing dreams come true! There are many angles and methods to use to stand out from the competition and not all real estate agents are made the same. Just as you’d want to find the best doctor to treat a serious illness or the best lawyer that will fight for your rights, you need to do the research on the best real estate agent for your needs. Take the time to interview at least two before making a choice. You’ll be glad you did.

Financing

Remember to do the same research when finding a lender. You’ll want to definitely go through the pre-approval process before you start looking. There are also down payment help programs available. Check to see if you qualify!

The new Mukilteo Ferry Terminal, scheduled to be open December 2019, has begun construction on the initial pier pilings.  There is a walking path from the Mukilteo Sounder Station to Edgwater Beach for those interested on seeing the progress of the construction of the new terminal.

This is is exciting news for all Mukilites!  We’re finally going to have a beautiful promenade!  The new terminal will provide a safer way for cyclists and walk on passengers to board and disembark the ferry, as well as being more efficient for loading and unloading vehicles from the ferrys car deck.

Here’s a link to the plans:

SouthWest Surprise

Wow! I just got done writing my last blog post about Alaska Airlines announcing their flights from Paine Field starting in the Fall of this year. I was under the assumption that the new terminal was maxed out with Alaska Air and United confirmed for 19 flights a day, apparently that was fake news!?! Propeller who owns the terminal was able to tweak the timing and add more… I guess I shouldn’t be surprised, it’s the same concept in real estate construction. Builders add as many houses as they can to increase their net profit. It’s business, but this will be a quality of life adjustment. I know that the smaller planes will be a lot quieter than the old war planes that fly out of Paine Field (see my video below), but I will miss the times walking in Japanese Gulch without hearing a plane take off on my walks with the dogs.
